China's National Health Commission held a press conference on the morning of September 20th to report on the current state of China's "aging".
Wang Haedong, head of the commission's senior-age health department, revealed that China's "aging population" is "a high rate of increase in the number of elderly people and a rapid rate of aging." By the end of 2021, China's elderly population over the age of 60 will reach 267 million, accounting for 18.9% of the total population. Over 200 million people aged 65 and over account for 14.2% of the total population. During the period of the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025), the elderly population aged 60 and over is expected to exceed 300 million, or more than 20% of the total population. The commission also predicted that by around 2035, the elderly population will reach 400 million, more than 30% of the total population, and Japan will enter a more serious aging society. According to 2020 data, there are a total of 10 provinces in China with an elderly population rate of over 20%, with a higher aging rate in rural areas than in urban areas. "By 2050, the size and proportion of China's elderly population will peak," Wang Haidong said. Published : 2022/09/23 09:49 KST
