UNHCR Bachelet testifies that Chinese gov "restricted" her visit to Xinjiang on May
Michelle Bachelet, Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, said at the UN Human Rights Council on June 15th, "During a visit to the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China, Chinese government officials accompanied us on all journeys. I couldn't talk freely with detained Uighurs and I couldn't even contact their family."

Bachelet visited the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in China on May. However, she did not strongly criticize the human rights issue in Xinjiang, China, before and during her visit to China, and received strong criticism from various circles. She has indicated her intention to retire from the High Commissioner for Human Rights at the end of her term in August this year.

On the issue of human rights in Xinjiang, the UN Geneva Secretariat, which has 47 national representatives, issued a joint statement on June 14th, requesting the Chairman of the Human Rights Council to publish a human rights report in Xinjiang. The announcement of the Xinjiang Human Rights Report has been postponed for a long time.

The joint statement said, "Xinjiang has been subject to inhumane punishment such as torture, forced contraception, sexual violence, forced labor, and separation of children and parents. We call on the Chinese side to stop arbitrarily detaining minorities immediately, and at the same time provide a channel for UN officials to observe the local situation without restrictions."
