China confirms BA.2.12.1, which is more infectious than Omicron strain, "more infectious than stealth Omicron" = South Korea report
In China, "BA.2.12.1", which is about 20% more infectious than "Stealth Omicron", which is more infectious than the Omicron strain, was confirmed for the first time.

According to the Chinese Health Newsletter on May 18th, the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CCDC) recently introduced a case in which a mutant strain that is more infectious than the Omicron strain has flowed into China for the first time from overseas in the weekly newspaper "CCDC Weekly".

The patient, a 27-year-old Chinese man, departed Kenya and Nairobi on April 23rd and arrived in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province. The man, who had moved to a designated hotel with other passengers and had been in quarantine for 14 days, was tested positive for the COVID-19 virus on April 27th.

On April 30th, Chinese authorities further examined the patient's sample and found a BA.2.12.1 variant that is about 20% more infectious than "BA.2," also known as "stealth omicron."

The man said, "I haven't been in contact with an infected person for the last 14 days," and is currently moving to a hospital in Guangzhou for treatment.
