The insistence is by a researcher at Fudan University in Shanghai. He published his opinion in the American academic journal "NATURE Medicine". This paper is endorsed by the National Institutes of Health.

The paper also states that even if they give up on "Zero Corona" altogether, you can significantly reduce your risk by increasing the vaccination rate for the elderly.

According to the paper, the vaccination status as of March 2022 cannot suppress the epidemic of the Omicron mutant strain. Therefore, if the "Zero Corona Policy" is stopped immediately, medical collapse may occur and about 1.55 million people may die.

The Chinese government cites the large elderly population in China, the disparity in the development status of each region, and the shortage of absolute medical resources as reasons for continuing the "Zero Corona Policy".

In connection with this, Zhang Wenhong, chief of the Infection Department of Huashan Hospital, Shanghai Huashan University, recently emphasized the need for a "Zero Corona Policy" due to the low vaccination rate for the elderly in Shanghai. He argued that the "Zero Corona Policy" should prevent the collapse of medical care as a "time-saver" until the vaccination rate rises sufficiently.
