The three countries of Japan, the United States and South Korea have called for a public meeting of the United Nations Security Council to discuss North Korea's recent ballistic missile launches.

An official of the Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs told reporters today that the Security Council public meeting will be held on the afternoon of May 11th local time in New York, and South Korea will also attend as a party of interest.

According to Article 37 of the Security Council Provisional Procedures, the parties directly interested in the case can participate in the discussion even if they are not members of the Security Council. However, there is no voting right.

Both Japan, the United States and South Korea requested the convocation of the UN Security Council because North Korea has launched missiles one after another and is showing signs of a nuclear test. Seems to indicate. It also includes an external message that three countries are strongly cooperating in responding to North Korea's nuclear missiles.

Prior to this, Japan and South Korea also participated in the Security Council Public Conference convened in March to discuss the response to North Korea's intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) launch, and expressed their opinions.

In particular, the United States has been the chair of the Security Council since this month. UN Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield has suggested at a press conference inauguration on May 3rd that a resolution related to North Korea, which was under discussion at the Security Council, will be passed by the end of May.

The U.S. has compiled and is discussing with the Council members a new draft resolution on sanctions against the DPRK, which includes reducing the amount of crude and refined oil exports to the DPRK to 2 million and 250,000 barrels per year, respectively, half the previous level.

However, the permanent members of China and Russia are reluctant to sanction North Korea, and it is unlikely that the resolution will be passed. Even in situations where it is difficult for China and Russia to adopt the new resolution, the United States will promote the resolution and hold a public meeting to arouse the seriousness of North Korea's nuclear missile problem and put pressure on China and Russia. It seems that there is also an intention to do so.
