Rep. Woo Won-sik, standing chairman of the Minjoo Party's 'Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant Treated Water Marine Dumping Committee,' was appointed as chairman of the committee at the National Assembly on August 14th. At the conferment ceremony, the activity plan was announced.
A delegation of lawmakers is expected to visit Japan at the end of this month to prevent the discharge of treated water into the ocean.
Democratic lawmakers also visited Japan in April and July of this year and pointed out the unfairness of the discharge of treated water.
In addition, on the 17th, a petition was submitted to the UN Human Rights Council, stating that "the release of contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant paralyzed scientific safety measures and violated various forms of international cooperation."
After that, it is planned to recruit petition groups from all citizens and submit petitions again.
Furthermore, the DPJ plans to submit to the president's office a petition signed by the people against the dumping of contaminated water from the nuclear power plant into the ocean, with the participation of more than 1.5 million people.
Along with this, the plan was to "organize an international campaign in conjunction with the United Nations SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) Assembly to be held next month and promote a special meeting with the UN Secretary-General."
Rep. Woo said, "President Yoon Seo-gyeol should tell Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to reconsider the plan to release contaminated water at the Korea-U.S.-Japan summit meeting on August 18th" We should immediately take measures that only the government can take, such as filing a lawsuit."
