Yoon Do-il (18) and Eum Joon (19) provided first aid to the victims after an indiscriminate killing occurred at the AK Plaza department store in Seohyeon-dong, Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi-do on the afternoon of August 3rd.
Around 6:00 p.m., the friends found two young men and a woman lying on the ground while passing by the crime scene.
Yoon rushed to them and held the more severely wounded of the two victims, a woman, for about 30 minutes. Meanwhile, Eum was checking to see if the criminal had returned to the scene.
In the process of stopping the bleeding, a man who was presumed to be the culprit approached with a weapon, but Yoon continued to stop the bleeding.
Eum speaking of the situation at the time said, "While Yoon stopped the bleeding, I was watching to see if the culprit would come back. I chased the man."
Meanwhile, around 6 p.m. on the same day, the suspect, Mr. Choi (23), indiscriminately stabbed people on the first and second floors of the AK Plaza department store.
Just before the incident, Mr. Choi drove his car into the pavement and deliberately crashed into a pedestrian.
Choi, who was immediately arrested on suspicion of attempted murder by the dispatched police, explained why he committed the crime, saying, "The group is trying to kill me." Previously, he had said that he suffered from paranoia. A simple narcotic reagent test was negative.
Choi's latest crime injured 14 citizens in their 20s to 70s (nine from murder and five from car crashes), 12 of whom were classified as seriously injured.
Police are investigating the details of the incident.
