An official from the South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) told reporters on August 4th, "South Korea and the United States share a firm understanding of the role of USFK for the peace and stability of the Korean Peninsula. The role and mission of the US Forces Korea are to protect the territory and sovereignty of the Republic of Korea from the threat of North Korea while building a strong combined defence posture with our forces."
The official appears to have denied the content of the report by referring to the fact that the role of the USFK is to protect the country from threats from North Korea.
The daily newspaper Hankook Ilbo quoted a military source and said, "In March and April, when President Yoon Seo-gyeol was about to visit the United States as a state guest, South Korea and the United States communicated through high-level diplomatic and security channels. We discussed the scope and scale of the activities of USFK in the event of armed conflict in the Indo-Pacific region," the report said. "The size of the U.S. forces stationed in South Korea in Taiwan, which the U.S. side recently mentioned, is about the size of a brigade (3,000 to 5,000 troops)."
There have been speculations that the United States may deploy troops in South Korea in the event of a military conflict in the Taiwan Strait, but this is the first time that a specific scale has been mentioned.
