Airbnb and Seoul cooperate to revitalize tourism... Also Calls for tourism regulation relaxation = Korea
According to the Korean media "Money Today", Seoul Mayor Oh Sehun is the co-founder and top strategy of Airbnb at the Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) in Seoul on May 17th. He met with the person in charge, Mr. Nathan Blechalczyk, and had a discussion. In September, the city of Seoul and Airbnb are planning an event where DDP can be booked on Airbnb for the night before the opening of Seoul Fashion Week.

This event gives only one pair (two people) a chance to enjoy the view of Dongdaemun from the rooftop in a private space and to see the fashion show with celebrities in the front row at Seoul Fashion Week.

At the meeting, the two talked about Seoul's tourism potential and potential for growth. "I saw an article saying that Seoul was the fourth most popular city for Airbnb customers to visit," said Mr. Oh. "Korea is the fastest growing market in Airbnb Asia," said Blechalczyk.

Mr. Oh also reported that he tried to offer Airbnb two vacant rooms at the Seoul Partners House in Hannam-dong, Yongsan-gu, where he recently moved in. Mr. Wu said, "I instructed them to consider making it available to foreign tourists, but it was not possible because domestic law only permits private lodging to be done in houses of a certain size or smaller." He added, "As the mayor of Seoul, I am devising various projects that I can take the lead in developing the tourism industry in Seoul."

"I think Airbnb will help Seoul reach 30 million tourists this year," Blechalczyk said of the collaboration with the city of Seoul.

However, in an interview with the Hankook Economic Daily, Mr. Blechalczyk called for the easing of South Korea's tourism restrictions, saying, "Restrictions that are rare in other countries should be lifted."

In an editorial on the 19th of the Hankook Keizai Shimbun, the South Korean government has set a goal of attracting 30 million foreign tourists by 2027. If even the regulations for tourism cannot be brought in line with global standards, it will be difficult to attract 30 million people and reduce the deficit in the travel balance."

"It is time for the entire government to awaken and support not only the bill to revise the Tourism Promotion Act, which has been under discussion in the National Assembly for six years but also to make a big leap forward in the Korean tourism industry," he said
